If you could be a character from a book or film, who would you be? Why?

A lot of the fiction and movies I enjoy, the characters have definitely seen some $h!t. I took a cursory look at my bookcase for ideas but didn’t want to get up, to look more closely. Long day at work. LOL.

But, if we’re going with movies, since those titles are easier to see from where I am sitting, I guess I would say Veronica from Splendor. The worst thing she goes through, I’ve already experienced. Only her relationships panned out better.

I used to relate a lot to Amy Blue from Doom Generation (same director). But she doesn’t get a legit Happily Ever After. And I am not that angsty anymore, even if I have my moments. AND I don’t wear as much black as I once did.

In many ways, Splendor struck me as a revisionist version of Doom Generation. Two dudes, one girl– one even played by the same actor, though his personalities in each film couldn’t be more different.

Not as violent. Warm and fuzzy. Low-stakes. Everyone is pretty kind and loveable, and incredibly good-looking.

Beyond a couple girls who trash-talk Veronica in the bathroom where she’s working as a model at a car show (they don’t know she can hear them), the only real “villain” is a competing love interest. He’s more boring than evil. His big “appeal” is stability and money. And, he attends therapy. But he’s one of those people for whom going to therapy becomes their whole personality.

So yeah. Maybe not the absolute closest character to my personality, but I wouldn’t mind living out her life story. Maybe especially if I could fast forward to the part of it where she’d presently be the age I am now. Not sure if I would want to relive my 20’s for ANYONE. Likely not.
